Summary: This article talks about how the old incandescent light bulbs are becoming obsolete. “This was no sudden death. The diagnosis came in years ago, in 2007, when President George W. Bush signed a law to replace standard incandescent with more efficient bulbs”(Levas). Starting this year both 75 and 100 watt light bulbs will be banned in the United States as a push to live a more green lifestyle.
Connection: The current event relates to what we are doing in class with my debate paper topic. Mine was on the green movement which goes along with energy efficient light bulbs. We are taking our debate paper changing it from personal to formal formatting and making it into a digital essay.
Reaction: I am all for the use of more efficient light bulbs such as the ones listed in the article. It’s great that the United States are standing up for the environment in such ways as the banning of certain watt light bulbs and the law the George W. Bush pasted. This event affects me now because it affects my parents if they spend more money on the power bill then it leaves less money for family things but that is just short term the long term effects of this is reducing waste and overall helping clean up the environment.
Short Answer: This author supports his claim by saying, “There are 4 billion light bulb sockets in the U.S. and more than 3 billion of them still use the standard incandescent technology that hasn't changed much in 125 years," the EPA says, "A standard incandescent is only 10% efficient -- the other 90% of the electricity it uses is lost as heat"(Levas). This shows that it’s not smart for people to continue the inefficient incandescent light bulbs anymore. Another thing the author of this article used to back up his information is a link to a EPA PDF file that talks about the law that I mentioned earlier that George W. Bush signed which made people use the United States resources more conservatively.
